Software/Tool Developer (Advanced Concepts Office)

Job Description

This position is located in Huntsville, AL.

This position is to provide software development and integration in support of the in-house analysis capabilities of the Advanced Concepts Office (ACO) at NASA’s Marshal Space Flight Center (MSFC). The Advanced Concepts Office at MSFC specializes in concept definition studies for space exploration elements. The Office consists of multi-discipline design teams that can provide fully-integrated assessments of missions and vehicle elements.

The Software/Tool Developer will work with engineers to develop and maintain the INTROS and multiPOST software applications used in the Advanced Concepts Office at MSFC. The selected candidate will collect, interpret, and document system requirements; assist in developing methods; and participate in code development. Some functions of the position are as follows:

  • Perform software systems engineering functions as required
  • Analyze and develop software per customer requirements
  • Implement source code per detailed designs
  • Support software integration troubleshooting and bug-fix activities
  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures
  • Conduct and participate in design and code reviews
  • Enter or update documentation
  • Troubleshoot and correct test automation anomalies
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure products meet performance goals
  • Produce documentation and user training materials to assist users in the operation of software

Qualifications & Experience

A four-year degree is preferred. 0 - 5 years of experience is required.

Required skills:

  • Developing software in the Python scripting language and C++
  • Proficient in tools/languages such as Python, Qt, and C++
  • Proficient in working across multiple operating systems
  • Exposure to tools/languages/standards such as: XML, Java, Git, SVN, and batch scripting

Desired Skills:

  • Systems engineering experience in disciplines such as software integration, requirements development, verification and validation, and testing
  • Distributed and clustered file systems with mixed Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Network communications with TCP and UDP
  • Configuration management of distributed computing platforms
  • Developing user interfaces
  • Software development for, and use of, a large computer cluster

Work Environment:
Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate electromechanical and servo-hydraulic materials test machines, furnaces, environmental chambers, hydraulic pumps, a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
